Two Main Modules
Active Search Engine has two main modules: the Directory User Interface (the directory itself, what your search engine visitors will see and interact with) and the Administration Interface (a powerful interface that allows the search engine administrator to manage the search engine configuration, its look and feel, the approval of user listings and votes, sending newsletters to subscribers with the click of a button and much more).

Active Search Engine features an easy to use, but very powerful Yahoo style user interface which includes an appealing and interactive web site automatically built for you by the search engine software. Users interact with your engine in real time searching for webs, voting for sites, browsing through categories, visiting your top links section or clicking on links. As an example the Hot and New Links section on the front page are updated automatically in real time as users add or visit new pages.

Fast and Accurate Search
Users search the web directory by just entering words or word phrases in the search box, selecting whether to search for all words or any of the words entered and clicking on Search. From a few hundred to millions of simultaneous searches, Active Search Engine Power Search® will perform fast and accurate searches querying the resource database and looking in all fields including a listing title, description, keywords and web addresses to display the results in a user friendly format.

Category Browsing
Users interested in a particular subject can easily navigate to their favorite categories and subcategories by just clicking on them from the search engine home page. Furthermore both the search results ranking and the category listings results are configurable by the search engine administrator and listings can be ordered by user ratings, number of votes, hits, alphabetic title, date, featured listings and other criteria.

Unlimited number of listings and categories
Because Active Search Engine is a database-based solution, it allows an unlimited number of links, categories and subcategories to be added to your directory. Active Search Engine is a scalable solution that allows you to grow your directory from a few hundred links to literarily millions of links without any impact on your search engine performance and speed.

Popular Top Links area
You will soon find out that your search engine Top Links section will be one of your site’s most visited areas. Link owners and visitors alike will revisit these rankings again and again and will try to score higher on your search engine’s Top Links rankings. Interactive Ranking System
Search engine visitors can rate a resource from 1 to 5 stars and enter comments about the particular web site. Category Management
Your first step when you start your own search engine will be to decide what categories and subcategories to create. You can have any number of nested categories so you can create Arts/ Architecture/ Gothic, Arts/ Architecture/ Gothic/ Cathedrals and so on without limit. Categories and subcategories can be setup to allow listings (rootable) or to force the end user to go to the last level of subcategories to be able to add any listings to it. Creating and managing categories is an easy and intuitive one step process.

Link Management
Validating, editing, deleting or finding any collection of links is fun and easy with Active Search Engine administration interface which allows you to perform powerful functions with a single click.

Edit and modify any link field as you wish or validate it to be listed in your directory by marking it as ţAvailable.

You will notice that Active Search Engine has automatically filled out some key and useful information about each link like when it was added, from where (what page in your directory or remote web page) was it added from, the IP address of the user adding the link, the software submitter used, if any, and so on. When you validate or modify a link just click on the Update button and that's it, the approved link will be listed live in your search engine.

Characterize your web listings with icons
Active Search Engine comes preconfigured with 6 default icons that the search engine administrator can assign to any web listing when approving or editing links. You can easily modify the meaning of the existing icons or add an unlimited number of new icons to enhance the look of your directory listings.

User Rating Management
Finding any collection of user votes can also be done using Active Search Engine Power Search®. Validating or deleting individual or groups of ratings is similar to link validation and easily done with a single click.

As for link validation, user ratings can also be configured in automatic mode to be approved by Active Search Engine without any intervention required by the administrator. The rating system detects voting IPs automatically and can be configured to reject the same user voting the same listings more than once during the same day.

Reports and logs
Because Active Search Engine is able to perform most tasks automatically, it keeps logs of its own activity so that the search engine administrator can review it at any time. Examples include reports of the keywords searched by users, confirmation emails sent and to whom they were sent, newsletters sent and much more.

Avoid duplicate links
Active Search Engine not only avoids adding invalid web addresses before they are added to your directory but also automatically checks for duplicate links both in manual and automatic mode saving the search engine administrator from this time consuming task. Broken Link Checker®
As time passes by, link owners may change hosting, domains or just delete a previously correct url address. Active Search Engine Broken Link Checker® is a useful application accessible from the Administration Area that will automatically check for any links that have become broken (their web url address is no longer valid) allowing the search engine administrator to delete them, review them individually or even send an email warning the link owners with the click of a button.

Invalid Email Checker®
As time passes by, users may change email providers and some email addresses become obsolete. Active Search Engine Invalid Email Checker® will automatically check for email addresses that are no longer valid. Note that there are two different and powerful instances for this application that you can access from Active Search Engine Administration Menu. One checks emails in your search engine links database while the other checks emails in your mailing list database.

Managing the Mailing List
There are many ways in which Active Search Engine builds your mailing list. As users subscribe for your newsletter, or opt-in when adding links or voting webs your mailing list will grow exponentially and Active Search Engine will keep on adding thousands of email addresses to it without any effort on your part. While the Access version will comfortably manage hundreds of thousands of email addresses, if you plan to manage millions of emails we urge you to consider the SQL version from the beginning.

A full list tabulated in pages will show all user names and email addresses which have subscribed to your list. Note that there is no limit to the number of emails that Active Search Engine is able to store (both for the Access and SQL version), so you may have from hundreds to millions of email addresses in your mailing list only limited by the size of your server database or web hosting disk space.

Sending personalized emails, newsletters or bulk mailings to any group of users with Active Search Engine Power Mailer®
Use Active Search Engine Power Mailer® to send a personalized email or newsletter to the full mailing list or just to a selected group of link owners. Since Power Mailer® is fully integrated with Power Search® there are no limits when selecting the group of recipients for your mailings. From a few hundred to millions of email recipients, Power Mailer® can be configured in personalized or bulk mode and is much faster than the typical desktop mailer since it runs on the web server and therefore does not use your desktop resources allowing you to concentrate on other tasks while Power Mailer® is doing its job on the server computer.

Translate it to any language
All Active Search Engine text, messages, emails and content can be edited or fully translated to any language. All text is contained in a language file and template files that you can edit from the administration interface or using your favorite editor. At this time there are out of the box versions available in English and Spanish and the software supports extended characters for any other language.

Two Editions, Access and SQL
Active Search Engine comes in two different editions depending on the database you plan to use: Active Search Engine for Access (uses a MS-Access database -included with the software) and Active Search Engine for SQL (uses a SQL database -available on your server). For both versions all software functions and features are included so there is no difference in software functionality. The difference resides rather on the performance of Access versus SQL databases themselves. You can select one version or the other depending on the number of simultaneous users that you plan will be accessing your web site at any given time. While Microsoft Access and JET databases will perform well for medium sized sites (up to hundreds of simultaneous users performing the same function such as adding a listing at the same time) when the number of simultaneous users starts to get large (thousands to millions of simultaneous users performing the same function at the same time) SQL will perform much better. Note that you can upgrade from the Access to the SQL version at any time, however if you already own a high traffic site we recommend to start directly with the SQL version. The Access version will support sites with thousands of visitors and the SQL version with millions of visitors without slowing down the search engine speed.
